Children’s Commissioner for England Dame Rachel de Souza is launching a one-month campaign to help improve childhood. Between 19th April and 19th May, children across the country will be encouraged to participate in The Big Ask – an anonymous, national survey that focuses on ways to progress childhood in the years ahead. All children will have access to the survey through their school and via the Oak National Trust, where footballer Marcus Rashford will make a brief appearance. The ambitious project echoes that of William Beveridge, who created a similar investigation in the years after WWII. Results from the survey are meant to assist the Children’s Commissioner and her team in identifying which areas of children’s lives should be improved upon once the pandemic has ended. “I want ‘The Big Ask’ to be the biggest survey of children ever carried out in this country so that we can better understand what children want from the people in power” de Souza declares. Focus groups with babies and nursery aged children is also expected to take place, along with a tour by de Souza to schools across the country.
